Philippine Insurers celebrate 'bayanihan'

Bayanihan is a trait known to Filipinos. It is the spirit of working together and helping those in need. It is the same spirit that defines non-life insurance.

Celebrating this trait was the objective of the Philippine Insurers and Reinsurers Association (PIRA) in its recent PIRA Awards.

Focused on the industry's response to the devastation caused by Super Typhoon Haiyan, the recent PIRA Awards recognized companies that extended help beyond their duty to indemnify those insured for the disaster.

Among the companies honored at the event was the ASEAN Insurance Council which was one of the first to offer help to the Philippines after the catastrophe.

PIRA also recognized key media personalities who figured prominently in the coverage of the onslaught of Yolanda.

Other awardees were educational institutions that promote insurance in their curriculum.

The finalists of the first Voice of PIRA singing contest provided inspiring song numbers during the event.

PIRA Deputy Chairman Michael Rellosa said this year's awards were given not as prizes in a contest but as a way of recognition for those who have done good to others without expecting anything in return.
