The Philippine Insurers and Reinsurers Association (PIRA) has announced the appointment of Mr. Michael F. Rellosa as new Executive Director effective June 16, 2018.
PIRA Chairperson Rebecca B. Dela Cruz, in a statement, said the PIRA Board of Trustees has appointed Rellosa to be the association's first Executive Director
"This is a milestone for PIRA," said Dela Cruz. "This signals a change in how PIRA conducts its affairs, with an industry leader acting as a full time spokesperson of non-life insurance and not just a volunteer."
Rellosa recently retired as President and Chief Operating Officer of Fortune General Insurance, a post he occupied for almost 18 years.
Prior to his appointment as PIRA Executive Director, Rellosa has served PIRA as two-time Chairman and as member of the Board of Trustees for 10 years, heading PIRA's Public Relations Committee. Before this, he served the industry as trustee of the Insurance and Surety Association of the Philippines (ISAP) before it merged with the Philippine Insurance Rating Association to form the present PIRA.
On top of this, in 2016, he also served as Chairman of the ASEAN Insurance Council (AIC), the policy making body for the insurance industry in Southeast Asia.
All of these positions in the industry he served as volunteer of such organizations.
Rellosa began his journey in insurance in 1983 as a fresh graduate of Ateneo de Manila with a degree in Economics. He became a Management Trainee of the Ayala-owned FGU Insurance, and from there moved to other companies in various capacities and later to Hong Kong to work for a major insurance brokerage firm.
He is expected to take on the role of "Chief Evangelist" of the non-life insurance industry, spreading the "good news" of general insurance to Filipinos. He is an advocate of insurance literacy, something majority of Filipinos are not familiar with.
"I would like to make our countrymen understand the importance of insurance. In my new capacity, my goal is to lead the industry in promoting insurance literacy for the next three years," he said.
Rellosa will also lead PIRA in its advocacies for the industry, particularly the lowering of taxes on non-life insurance, exploring ways to make PIRA a self-regulatory organization, promoting disaster preparedness, fire safety and road safety, and telling young people that insurance is a fulfilling and rewarding career for them.
Rellosa will be backstopped by Mr. Rogelio Concepcion whose appointment as PIRA General Manager has been renewed by the PIRA Board of Trustees in its recent board meeting.
PIRA is the umbrella organization of all non-life insurance companies in the Philippines. It serves as the voice of the non-life insurance industry and works hand-in-hand with government and private sectors in safeguarding the interest of non-life insurance companies and their clients.
At present, PIRA is composed of 60 companies and has a standing partnership with other industry associations comprised of brokers, agents, adjusters and other insurance practitioners.Hits: 77
